What is the safest way to exchange your ERC20 tokens for XRC20 tokens if they are already on my Ledger wallet? Do I need to send it back to Coinbase first? There seems to be a lot of confusion and people losing their assets trying to correct this.

Please try following this guide https://community.iotex.io/t/instructions-depositing-withdrawing-iotx-with-coinbase/3090#withdrawing-iotx-from-coinbase-3 - but in your case you adjust withdrew from Coinbase, so just substitute Coinbase for “Ledger”. You will need to have your tokens available in Metamask, then use iotube.org as in the guide (the link has changed).
