Proposal Description

Introduction

The JobCrypt Global Talks: IoTeX Series is a series of talks at in person and online venues across Europe. The purpose of the Talks will be to introduce and educate participants on the IoTeX blockchain, ecosystem, and support structures with a view to them getting involved or starting a career in the ecosystem. The goal of the series will be to create strong nuclear real world hubs of IoTeX technology supporters and contributors in based in Munich and Liverpool paired with a strong following of online advocates across Germany, the UK and elsewhere.

Duration and Topics

The JobCrypt Global Talks: IoTeX Series will consist of approximately 12 weeks worth of talks to the community by up to 18 projects from within the IoTeX ecosystem. The talks will be held in Munich, Germany and Liverpool, United Kingdom as well as online. The goal of the series will be to highlight IoTeX industry activity and adoption in existing areas such as Sustainability and in new areas like MachineFi, DeFi and NFTs.

Format

Each in person event will be hosted at a local venue with refreshments and SWAG provided for attendees. An NFT will be issued post event to each “checked in” attendee.

Each online event will be hosted on Zoom with SWAG give away competitions for attendees. An NFT will be issued post event to each “checked in” attendee.

For German events audio translations will be provided

Attendee Acquisition

We will look to draw attendees from local learning institutions. We are establishing relationships with local universities with the aim of drawing mainly undergraduate participation. Promotion will be both online and offline to garner the widest attendance locally.

Final Deliverable

The final deliverable of this project will be a community into which new and existing IoTeX projects can readily engage and recieve support by-passing the “interest and traction mountain range.” In short as opposed to engaging the wider blockchain community, the community created will provide loci of friendly faces able to foster emerging IoTeX projects (e.g. post hackathon) and drive feature adoption elsewhere in the ecosystem.

Optional Requirements

The following are optional requirements which we would ask the IoTeX foundation to consider:

  • SWAG designs
    • for local distribution
  • Project nominations
    • specific projects to include in the talks series
  • Speaker nominations
    • specific speakers to include in the talks series

Existing Community

Hi Tony - Thanks for posting your proposal. I like the idea of these online and IRL events to grow the community. The requested amounts seem high to me. Can you break down what those funds would go towards?

Hi Marcos -

Thank you for the response, here is the break down of the costs per event.
Venue + PA + additional equipment
Food
Drinks
(this block is usually about $3k for 50 - 100 people)

Video + Streaming + post production (professional grade)
Photography + post production (professional grade)
Interpreting + Translation (professional grade)
(this block is usually about $2k for the duration)

Locally Manufactured SWAG
Off line media e.g. fliers
Off line outreach e.g. universities, professional communities etc
Social Media planning + execution
NFT designs
Event Planning
Emergency Support e.g. volunteers call in sick
(this block consists the remaining $1k)

I hope that helps let me know if you need any more info happy to help

Thanks for the more detailed cost breakdown. There are also a couple of other models you might consider and price out.

  1. In person events with more scaled back ‘production values’ (to use a theater/film term) For example:
  • Smaller, less expensive venues until you validate that you can draw a larger audience.
  • Minimal refreshments
  • Live stream without post production
  • and [more free or low cost ways to stage an in person event]

I imagine you get the idea.

  1. Online only, targeted to specific locales and languages. These could be quite low cost even with post-production work to present a quality record of the event. Again, if you validate that you can identify and draw an audience then it will be much easier to make the argument that there would be a return on investing in a more full scale real-life event.

Please understand that these are my personal thoughts and don’t represent the position of IoTeX.

Hi @marcosd thank you for the pointers. We had examined most in earlier iterations of the proposal however they consistently put us at odds with what we’re trying to achieve. For example less expensive venues are either to far for people to reach or too small to accommodate the crowds you mentioned. We could focus on drawing crowd but that defeats the object of people getting to know each other and hence network effects of coming back and bringing more.

When we examined “online only” unfortunately the “on the ground” perceptions of blockchain/crypto/bitcoin were not good in no way helped by recent headlines. In short people don’t trust us as an industry, and sadly not without good reason. Hence the approach to literally put ourselves out in front of the people and show them there is more to the space and IoTeX that is positive and worth considering.

In short we designed the proposal to have attendees focused on the substance of the IoTeX talks and the presenting IoTeX projects, not on the surroundings, catering or room temperature. Given we would like them to stay with us the whole evening (till about 21:00ish) to learn something new, in the age where people are super time conscious, we opted towards giving IoTeX projects a decent shot to make their case with the audience.

With respect to media again low quality would be fine from a view that the work and efforts on the part of everyone are throw away. Our approach in proposal design was to use the media generated to create a library of content which can further be used to drive newcomers to come to the next event in the series, and after the series concludes provide the presenting IoTeX projects, audience members and IoTeX with an easy resource to share in their onwards activities.

As far as audience goes we already have a community of about 350+ people so our focus is more on reaching new people.
